The Barbara Jordan Institute for Policy Research (BJI) is a non-partisan and an unbias institution dedicated to research that focuses on finding solutions to the many public policy challenges facing urban communities at the local, regional, national and global scales of governance. By advancing civic engagement, building organizational capacity and raising awareness, our goal is to carry on the mission of scholarship and research

while maintaining the vision of the late Barbara Jordan. The BJI exists to bridge the gap between academic scholarship and public policy development through service to public and private sector clients and its independent research agenda

 

Mission

The Barbara Jordan Institute for Policy Research (BJI) is a university-wide institute dedicated to research that focuses on finding solutions to the many public policy challenges facing communities at the local, regional, national and global levels. By advancing problem-solving public policy, building organizational capacity and raising awareness, the institute’s goal is to carry on the mission of scholarship and research while maintaining the vision of the late Barbara Jordan. The institute exists to bridge the gap between academic scholarship and public policy development through service to public and private sector clients and its independent research agenda.

Focus Areas and Activities

The focus areas of the Institute include civic engagement, community development, the economy, education, governance, health security, leadership, access to voting, and voting rights. 

The Institute’s activities include: 1) Conducting research in its areas of focus; 2) providing education and training, including to a new generation of leaders; 3) offering certificate programs; 4) offering mini-courses; and 5) sponsoring workshops, symposia, and conferences.

Publications

Organizational Structure

The organizational structure of the Center consists of two major entities:

The Administrative Staff: The Staff consist of the Center’s Director and other staff members. Collectively, their responsibility is to conduct the day to day administrative and related activities of the Center.

The Research Working Groups: The research and publication activities of the Center are carried out by is Research Working Groups consisting of fellows:

Faculty Fellow: Any member of the TSU faculty with expertise in any of the areas of focus of the Center is eligible to serve as a faculty fellow.

Staff Fellow: Any staff member at TSU with expertise in any of the areas of focus of the Center is eligible to serve as a staff fellow.

Visiting Fellow: An individual from outside of TSU with expertise in any of the areas of focus of the Center is eligible to serve as a visiting fellow.

Graduate Student Fellow: Any graduate student, who is enrolled at TSU, and has an interest in any of the areas of focus of the Center, may be selected to serve as a graduate student fellow by one or more of the Center’s Working Groups.

Undergraduate Student Fellow: Any undergraduate student, who is enrolled at TSU, and has an interest in any of the areas of focus of the Center, may be selected to serve as an undergraduate student fellow by one or more of the Center’s Working Groups. 

Staff

The focus areas of the Center are civil conflicts, international conflicts, conflict resolution, food security, human-made and natural disasters, political violence, and terrorism.
