Band Auditions & Scholarships

TSU Band Audition & Scholarship Opportunities

Prospective wind and percussion students are invited to audition for the Texas Southern University Band and showcase their musical abilities through scales, prepared selections, and sight-reading. Auditions may be completed in person or virtually, providing prospective students with multiple opportunities to demonstrate their talents and become part of the Ocean of Soul.

Students interested in scholarship consideration are strongly encouraged to audition early. Scholarship opportunities are based on several factors, including musical ability, admission status, financial aid eligibility, program needs, and available funding.

Audition Requirements

  • Wind Players
    • 12 major scales, preferably two octaves and performed from memory
    • Prepared selection, such as an audition etude or solo
    • Sight-reading

  • Percussion Players
    • 40 PAS rudiments and/or major scales
    • Prepared selection
    • Sight-reading

Scholarship Consideration

Scholarship offers are distributed via email to selected prospective students. Before a final scholarship offer can be made, students must:

  • Be accepted for admission to Texas Southern University
  • Complete and submit the FAFSA with information provided to Texas Southern University
  • Successfully complete the band audition process

Please note that acceptance into the Texas Southern University Band does not guarantee a scholarship offer. Scholarship funding is limited and awarded based on several factors. Students seeking scholarship consideration are strongly encouraged to complete their audition by April 2027.

Band Scholarship Awards

For in-state students, scholarship awards may be determined by several factors, including:

  • Musical ability and audition performance
  • Academic performance, including GPA and applicable test scores
  • Instrumentation and specific program needs for the upcoming year
  • Financial aid information provided through the FAFSA
  • Availability of scholarship funding

Students are encouraged to audition as early as possible, as scholarship funds are limited.

Out-of-State Students

A limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers may be available to qualifying students. Students who receive a band scholarship may also be considered for an out-of-state tuition waiver; however, receiving a band scholarship does not guarantee that an out-of-state waiver will be awarded.

Availability and eligibility are subject to university requirements and available funding.

Virtual Auditions

Virtual audition opportunities are available for prospective students who are unable to audition on campus. Students may be asked to submit a recorded performance of their scales or rudiments and prepared selection. Sight-reading and other portions of the audition may be completed virtually with a member of the band staff.

Specific instructions will be provided when an audition is scheduled.
