An Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) is a required, full-time clinical rotation in the final year of the PharmD program that ensures students gain real-world experience across core pharmacy practice settings. LAPPES, by contrast, are limited, competitive experiences that go beyond these requirements, offering specialized, high-impact opportunities with deeper mentorship and focus. Students pursue LAPPES to build advanced skills, stand out for residencies or fellowships, and gain a stronger edge in their careers.

PharmD residencies are structured, post-graduate training programs that provide intensive, hands-on clinical experience under the guidance of experienced preceptors. They are highly competitive and allow pharmacists to deepen their expertise, refine clinical decision-making, and often specialize in areas like critical care, oncology, or ambulatory care. Students pursue residencies to strengthen their clinical skills, expand career opportunities, and position themselves for advanced practice roles.
